About
As of 2026, it's 41 years old.
Teddy Ruxpin powered up in 1985 as the world's first animatronic storytelling teddy bear — slot a cassette into his back and his eyes and mouth moved in sync as he read you a story. It was equal parts enchanting and, when the batteries died mid-sentence and his face slowed to a demonic crawl, the stuff of nightmares.
He was the best-selling toy of 1985 and 1986, a genuine marvel of the era's tech, and the cause of many small children's complicated feelings about a bear that talked. The line eventually upgraded to digital cartridges but the slightly uncanny charm remained.
Talking, blinking, and occasionally terrifying, Teddy Ruxpin is the animatronic bear that read bedtime stories — until his batteries turned story time into a horror film.
