About
As of 2026, it's 44 years old.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe flexed onto shelves in 1982, a line of impossibly muscular barbarian-meets-sci-fi action figures led by He-Man and his nemesis Skeletor. Crucially, the toys came first and the hit cartoon followed — a then-novel strategy that essentially made the show a daily commercial for the figures.
'By the power of Grayskull!' became a playground battle cry, Castle Grayskull was the dream playset, and the whole muscle-bound, sword-and-sorcery aesthetic defined a chunk of '80s boyhood. It also drew complaints about cartoons-as-ads that eventually changed the rules.
Beefy, fantastical, and merchandising-first, He-Man is the toy line that built a cartoon empire to sell itself — and absolutely succeeded.
