About
As of 2026, it's 42 years old.
Transformers arrived in 1984 with the irresistible hook printed right on the box: robots that fold and click into cars, jets, and (memorably) a cassette player. The toys, the cartoon, and the comics dropped simultaneously in a coordinated assault on the wallets of an entire generation, and 'more than meets the eye' became a permanent catchphrase.
Optimus Prime and Megatron became household names, the 1986 animated movie traumatized a generation by killing off beloved characters, and the franchise eventually spawned a series of very loud, very profitable Michael Bay films. Through it all, the core thrill — transforming a robot back and forth until the joints wore loose — never aged.
Clever, transforming, and endlessly rebooted, Transformers is the toy that turned 'is it a robot or a truck?' into a billion-dollar question.
