About
As of 2026, it's 37 years old.
Polly Pocket snapped open in 1989, originally created by a British dad who built a tiny dollhouse inside a makeup powder compact for his daughter. The result was a line of palm-sized cases that opened into complete miniature worlds with dolls barely an inch tall.
The whole appeal was portability and that delightful click-clack of the compact opening to reveal a secret little house, salon, or castle — pocket-sized magic you could take anywhere and easily lose under the couch. Mattel later supersized the dolls, to mixed nostalgia.
Tiny, self-contained, and pocketable by design, Polly Pocket is the toy that crammed an entire dollhouse into something the size of a compact.
