In 1981, Big Blue, a company best known for room-sized mainframes, slapped together an off-the-shelf Intel chip and Microsoft's DOS and called it the IBM Personal Computer. The plan was so casual that IBM let other companies copy it, accidentally inventing the entire 'PC-compatible' universe.
