Two years after the CD arrived, Sony shrank the player to pocketability (well, large-pocket-ability) with the Discman in 1984, letting you take that pristine digital sound on the road. Or at least to the couch, if you didn't move too much.
Its eternal nemesis was skipping: jog, sneeze, or breathe wrong and your song hiccuped, a problem 'anti-shock' buffers spent a decade heroically not quite solving. Cargo pants existed partly to house this thing and its six spare AA batteries.
