Before the Game Boy, Nintendo's first taste of handheld glory was a calculator-thin slab that played exactly one game and, in its spare time, told you the time. Each model was locked to a single LCD title, so 'which Game & Watch?' was a real personality question.
Designer Gunpei Yokoi dreamed it up after watching a bored commuter fiddle with an LCD calculator — and casually invented the D-pad along the way, the cross-shaped control scheme that every controller since has copied.
