About

As of 2026, it's 40 years old.

Most BMWs are born in boardrooms. The M3 was born in a homologation loophole. To go racing in touring cars, BMW had to sell a road-going version, so the engineers took a humble 3 Series, bolted on flared box arches, a near-vertical rear window for aero, and a screaming four-cylinder, and accidentally created the most successful touring car of all time.

That engine, the S14, is the soul of the thing: a high-revving 2.3-litre four that sounds less like a sedan and more like an angry motorcycle. It didn't make huge numbers on paper, but it loved to rev, and the whole car was tuned by people who clearly drove to work via the nearest racetrack.

The E30 M3 is now one of the most fetishised cars on the planet, the kind that turns sensible adults into people who say 'it's an investment, honey.' Then BMW spent the next 40 years chasing it: the E92 swapped four cylinders for a glorious naturally-aspirated V8, a one-time-only experiment in the M3 bloodline that revs to 8,400rpm and sounds like a small war.

The lesson of the M3 is that the best performance cars aren't designed to be icons. They're designed to win on Sunday, and the legend just follows them home.
