Scooby-Doo has been running the exact same plot since 1969 and we keep watching it anyway: meddling teens and a cowardly talking dog drive a van to a 'haunted' location, get chased around, and unmask the ghost as a grumpy real-estate developer in a rubber mask. It would have worked, too, if not for those kids.
Its formula is so rigid it's basically a comfort ritual, and Scooby's Scooby Snacks–fueled cowardice made him one of animation's most enduring stars.
Formulaic, snack-driven, and eternally rerunning, Scooby-Doo is the show where the monster is always a guy in a costume and that's exactly why we love it.
