About
As of 2026, it's 70 years old.
Play-Doh began as a wallpaper-cleaning putty — until a schoolteacher realized kids could sculpt with the stuff, and the struggling soap company pivoted to selling it as a toy in 1956. It was the corporate Hail Mary of the century, and it worked spectacularly.
That instantly recognizable smell (officially trademarked, by the way) has been triggering nostalgia for nearly 70 years, and over three billion cans have been squished, rolled, and inevitably mixed into one sad gray-brown blob. No child has ever kept the colors separate. It cannot be done.
Squishy, fragrant, and impossible to resist mashing together, Play-Doh is the failed cleaning product that accidentally became a creativity machine.
