About
As of 2026, it's 73 years old.
Matchbox cars got their name and their size from a charming origin: a British schoolgirl was only allowed to bring toys that fit in a matchbox, so her father, who worked at die-casting firm Lesney, made her tiny cars that did exactly that. They launched in 1953 and became a global staple.
For years Matchbox ruled the small-die-cast world with realistic, modestly-styled British vehicles — until Hot Wheels arrived in 1968 with flashier cars and faster wheels and forced the whole category to get cooler. The two have been rivals (and eventually corporate siblings) ever since.
Tiny, realistic, and pocket-sized by design, Matchbox cars are the die-cast originals that fit a whole car collection into a school satchel.
