The Game Gear launched in 1991 with a bright, full-color backlit screen and a confident pitch: it was basically a portable Master System, and it looked spectacular next to the Game Boy's pea-soup display.
It just couldn't go anywhere. Six AA batteries got you roughly three to five hours, which meant 'portable' really meant 'portable to the nearest outlet.' Sonic looked incredible right up until the screen went dark.
Beautiful, battery-hungry, and always tethered to a wall.
