LaserDisc offered gorgeous picture quality on a shimmering disc the size of a dinner plate, making it the choice of cinephiles, A/V snobs, and anyone with shelf space to spare. It was the prestige format that never quite caught on.
It couldn't record, the discs were enormous, and you often had to flip them halfway through a movie like a giant CD — but the image put fuzzy VHS to shame, which was the whole point for its devoted fans.
Beautiful, bulky, and gloriously niche, LaserDisc was the format the future loved before the future actually arrived — basically the DVD's ambitious older sibling.
