About
As of 2026, it's 49 years old.
The Apple II was the machine that dragged the computer out of the hobbyist's garage and onto the family desk, complete with color graphics and a friendly beige case. Steve Wozniak designed nearly all of it himself, which is a flex of historic proportions.
It really took off when a little program called VisiCalc — the first spreadsheet — gave people an actual reason to buy a computer that wasn't 'because computers are neat.' Offices everywhere suddenly needed one.
Approachable, expandable, and wildly influential, the Apple II quietly launched the personal-computer era and a certain garage company along with it.
