About
As of 2026, it's 22 years old.
American Idiot was Green Day's wildly ambitious comeback — a full-blown punk rock opera about disillusionment, suburban boredom, and a character named Jesus of Suburbia, arriving at exactly the right cultural moment in 2004. The band that wrote two-minute songs about boredom had made a sprawling, theatrical concept album, and it worked spectacularly.
The title track, 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams,' and the nine-minute 'Jesus of Suburbia' revived the band and eventually became a Broadway musical.
Ambitious, anthemic, and unexpectedly grand, American Idiot is the punk rock opera that resurrected Green Day and captured the mood of its era.
