Sonic the Hedgehog is a blue hedgehog with an attitude problem and a deep, abiding need to go fast — created in 1991 specifically to give Sega a mascot cool enough to take on Nintendo's friendly plumber. The pitch was basically 'what if Mario, but with sunglasses energy.'
