About
As of 2026, it's 30 years old.
Resident Evil locked you in a mansion full of zombies in 1996, gave you barely enough bullets, and added voice acting so spectacularly bad it became beloved ('You were almost a Jill sandwich!'). It practically invented 'survival horror' — the genre where the real monster is your inventory limit.
The fixed camera angles, ammo scarcity, and sudden dog-through-the-window scares created a kind of dread no shooter had managed, where running away was usually the smart move.
Terrifying, clunky, and gloriously over-acted, Resident Evil is the game that proved sometimes the scariest thing in the room is realizing you only have four bullets left.
