How it unfolded

Thirteen teams, no qualifying — you simply sailed to Montevideo and entered. Hosts Uruguay, already two-time Olympic champions, came from behind to beat neighbours Argentina 4–2 in a feverish final and win the first World Cup ever staged. Half of Europe skipped the boat trip; they’ve regretted it ever since.
