The X-Files spent the '90s convincing a generation that the truth was out there and the government was definitely hiding it. Two FBI agents — one a true believer, one a skeptic — chased aliens, mutants, and conspiracies through a permanently dark, rain-soaked America, and 'I Want to Believe' became a genuine mantra.
It alternated genuinely terrifying 'monster of the week' episodes with a sprawling alien-conspiracy mythology that nobody, possibly including the writers, fully understood.
