About
As of 2026, it's 25 years old.
Microsoft barged into the console wars in 2001 with the original Xbox, a black slab so heavy it could double as gym equipment and a controller, nicknamed the 'Duke,' so large it had its own gravitational pull. It also shipped with a built-in hard drive, which was a genuinely big deal at the time.
Then came Halo, and Xbox Live, and suddenly trash-talking strangers through a headset became a beloved national pastime. A software company that made spreadsheets had, against the odds, crashed the gaming party and stayed.
The original Xbox was the giant black box that proved Microsoft could play with the big kids, then handed the controller to a console empire.
