About
As of 2026, it's 28 years old.
In 1998 every computer was beige, and then the iMac G3 showed up in translucent Bondi blue like it had wandered in from the future. You could see its guts through the candy-colored shell, and Apple decided that was a feature, not a confession.
The 'i' stood for internet, the floppy drive was unceremoniously dumped, and the whole thing came as one cheerful curve instead of a tower-plus-monitor jumble. It also rescued a struggling Apple, which worked out reasonably well for them.
The iMac G3 was the computer that proved technology could be fun to look at, dragging the entire industry kicking and screaming out of beige.
