About
As of 2026, it's 36 years old.
Ice Ice Baby holds a strange place in history as the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard Hot 100 — a milestone achieved by Vanilla Ice, who promptly insisted that his bass line was totally, completely different from the Queen and David Bowie song 'Under Pressure' that it was very obviously lifted from. Nobody was fooled, and the song was inescapable anyway.
'Word to your mother' and that unmistakable hook made it a pop-culture phenomenon and, eventually, a beloved punchline.
Catchy, ubiquitous, and gloriously dubious, Ice Ice Baby is the song that made chart history and then spent decades as the world's favorite cautionary tale about sampling.
