Quake went fully 3D in 1996 and dragged the shooter into a new dimension — dark, fast, and built on technology so cutting-edge that it basically created the modern PC gaming arms race of 'is your computer good enough.' It also pioneered online multiplayer and the dark art of the rocket jump.

It spawned competitive 'clans,' speedrunning, and a community of modders and pros who treated it less like a game than a sport with a soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails.

Brooding, blisteringly fast, and technically revolutionary, Quake is the game that turned the PC into a gladiator arena and 'lag' into a household tragedy.
