The Members Only jacket arrived with one of advertising's all-time great threats: 'When you put it on, something happens.' What happened was the 1980s, and congratulations, you were now in it.
A lightweight zip-up with an epaulet-trimmed racer collar and a little strap at the throat, it came in every color of the decade and conferred instant, affordable cool on teenagers everywhere. Owning one meant you were officially a member — of what, the ads never once clarified.
